"In Jacek Malczewski's multithreaded and symbolically extremely complicated works, the primary role was played by man and his fate, and to him almost all the artist's compositions were dedicated. Hence such a wealth of portraits, of which he left hundreds, as well as dozens of self-portraits and cryptoportraits, which are specific psychological studies. Malczewski portrayed almost the entire Krakow intellectual parnassus: writers, journalists, actors, collectors, artists, as well as many official personalities, doctors, friends. Of course, he also painted portraits on commission, but by far the greatest artistic and psychological value are the images of people with whom he was friends." (S. Krzysztofowicz-Kozakowska, "Jacek Malczewski. Life and Works," [n.m.] 2015, p. 55.) One of Malczewski's favorite models was Stanislaw Bryniarski (1829- 1914), a Krakow painter from the generation of Jan Matejko and Artur Grottger, who created views of Krakow's architecture and historic interiors, sometimes supplemented with minor staffage. Bryniarski was also involved in copying paintings, which he "improved" on occasion. This little-known painter, however, was made famous primarily by conterfects painted by Malczewski, who was fascinated by the unusually expressive face of the aged artist, with characteristic features, surrounded by picturesquely flowing gray hair. (compiled by Urszula Kozakowska-Zaucha, source: https://zbiory.mnk.pl/pl/wyniki-wyszukiwania/ catalog/145796) The featured painting with a sketch of the figure of Stanislaw Bryniarski is a preparatory study for one of Jacek Malczewski's most famous works, "Unknown Note." This work belongs to the collection of the National Museum in Cracow. Jacek Malczewski Unknown note, (Other titles: Portrait of painter Stanislaw Bryniarski, On an unknown note), 1902 (collection of MN in Krakow)
