Fra Angelico (also Beato Angelico or Fra Giovanni da Fiesole, actually Guido da Pietro) was born around 1387 in Tuscany and died in Rome in 1455. He was a representative of the Florentine Renaissance, working at the turn of the Italian Gothic and Renaissance.
According to Vasari's account, the painter joined a Dominican convent in Fiesole, near Florence, as a 20-year-old. Together with the convent, he later moved to the Monastery of San Marco in Florence. He also spent several years in Rome.
Fra Angelico's works are distinguished by their subtle and mature form. In his compositions he applied contemporary knowledge of perspective and spatial relationships, but also referred to the work of earlier masters including Giotto and Masaccio.
Fra Angelico at some point abandoned the golden backgrounds characteristic of the Middle Ages in favor of landscape. Beginning around 1440, he began creating numerous frescoes. Many of them can be found in the monastery of S. Marco, which today serves as the artist's museum.
