Biography
Polish painter, draftsman and illustrator. In 1850-52 he studied at the Warsaw School of Fine Arts under Jan Piwarski and Ksawery Kaniewski. In the following years he developed his skills independently. Already at less than 20 years of age, he enjoyed recognition as a portraitist, watercolor painter and illustrator. Around 1857 he stayed in Paris, where he rotated in the circle of the Polish art colony there. He lived and worked permanently in Warsaw. He was the author of numerous historical, battle paintings and genre scenes of an anecdotal nature. From childhood he also realized himself in horseback riding. It was at his family estate that his fascination with horses began, which was reflected in his excellent painting studies until the end of his life. The painter's scholarly and literary erudition and mastery of his technique earned him wide recognition among the greatest artists and critics of the second half of the 19th century.
