Erich Dummer began his adventure with painting with drawings of naval battles and sunsets. His first teacher was Karl Sondermann, under whose tutelage he became enthralled with nature by rendering it in romantic landscapes of Herrnburg, where the artist spent summers. He continued his studies in Weimar under Professor Theodor Hagen without abandoning his admiration for nature and painting the landscapes of Thuringia. Over time, he begins to enrich his color palette. In 1910 Dummer travels to Munich and turns to portrait painting, which, by taking up a new subject, gives his work a blast of freshness. Another caesura in Dummer's painting is his fascination with Cezanne - the artist's works become brighter, and the color palette also changes. It is during this period that the work "Painter at the easel" is created. A stay of several weeks in Timmendorfer Strand in the spring of 1921 marks the next stage of his work. Cezanne's influence ends .

Dummer was president of the "Lübeck Artists' Association." He was also a member of the board of directors at the Overbeck-Gesellschaft zu Lubeck and for a while its art director. In addition, he served on the jury of the " Association of Artists of Northwest Germany ".

In addition to his talent for painting, Dummer possessed a lively talent for writing. He often expressed it in Vaterstadtische Blätter, where his texts appeared along with reproductions of his works.
