Edward OKUÑ

1872 Wólka Zegrzyńska - 1945 Skierniewice

Student of Wojciech Gerson in 1890-91 at the Warsaw Drawing Class, in 1891-93 at the School of Fine Arts in Cracow under Izydor Jablonski and Jan Matejko. He continued his studies in 1893 in Munich under A. Aľbe and in Paris at the Académie Julian under J. P. Laurens. In 1897 he married Sophie Wanda Tolkemit, daughter of a landowner. Together they traveled to Munich and then via Hungary to Rome. There they lived, with few interruptions, for 20 years. There Okuń took part in the life of the Polish art colony. He traveled around Italy and was in Sorrento, Amalfi, Venice, Padua, Ravenna, Florence and Siena. He returned to Poland in 1921 and became a professor at the Warsaw School of Fine Arts, becoming its director in 1933-34. In Warsaw, he became vice-president of the Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts. He was a painter and printmaker whose style was developed during the Young Poland period. He painted landscapes and portraits maintained in the Art Nouveau manner. His vignettes adorning the refined art weekly Chimera, are classic examples of this style.

Corrado immortalized the Italian picturesque town of Anticoli in his paintings many times.
