Lot description
Christ, naked except for a loincloth, a red cloak, the crown of thorns on his head, is presented to the people by Pontius Pilate. Christ tries to turn away, but the Roman soldier grabs his back and holds him by a rope. The flesh of Christ is sallow and pale because of the torture, but also refers to the impending execution. Pontius Pilate wears a turban, in keeping with a medieval iconographic tradition that lasted into the 17th century.
There is a version signed and dated “Christianus Stainmiller de Augusta 1625” at Lichtenwert Castle near Brixlegg, Tyrol. (Bruno Bushart, in: Augsburger Barock, Augsburg exhibition catalogue, 1968, cat. no. 165, pp. 151-152.)
, Oil on wood, 76 x 60 cm
