Work description:
Bronislawa Rychter-Janowska is known as a painter of landscapes and noble manors. Small formats of the works are characteristic of the artist. However, it is worth bearing in mind that in Bronislawa Rychter-Janowska's paintings there were many recurring themes around Christmas. Among other things, the artist depicted marches of carolers, Christmas Eve suppers and atmospheric interiors with a Christmas tree lit up with numerous candles. Winter scenery was also a recurring theme in the macatas created by the artist.
The presented work shows the eponymous shepherdess. The painting draws attention to the complex chiaroscuro solutions, which affect the moodiness of the entire composition. The luminous effects are enhanced by juxtaposing the warm lights coming out of the windows from inside the church and the houses in the background with the cool glow of the Christmas star. Also excellent is the play of shadows unfolding on the snow and the apt choice of color gamut, which captures well the character of the frosty night.
