Biography
Bronislaw Kopczynski (1882 - 1964, Warsaw) - studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow under Teodor Axentowicz in 1902-1905. In 1906 he returned to Warsaw and began to create as an independent painter. However, after five years, he decided to continue studying painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow, this time under the direction of Leon Wyczółkowski and Jacek Malczewski. In 1920 he took an active part in the Polish-Bolshevik war. He was awarded, among others, the Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (1955) and the Medal of the 10th Anniversary of People's Poland (1955). He died in 1964 and is buried in Warsaw's Powązki cemetery. Kopczynski created graphics, lithography and satirical drawings for magazines. Above all, he was fascinated by the architecture of Polish cities, which he immortalized in his watercolors. He is the author of many vedutas depicting the architecture of pre-war Warsaw. Kopczynski's works are also a great historical source for varsavists, as they depict buildings that no longer exist. The artist tried to accurately depict architectural details, and his works sometimes featured random figures meant to represent characteristic types of residents of a particular city.
