oil, canvas, 61.5 x 50 cm, dated ca. mid-19th century.
The portrait of a young man shown in half pose against a park and forest landscape is a typical and characteristic example of German Romantic painting, of high artistic value. On the under-frame is an inscription in pencil referring to Ernst Stied, an engineer and builder born in Riga and died in St. Petersburg. However, the time of the portrait's creation, the portrayed person's clothing and the way the figure is depicted links the painting to an earlier period, the 1830s-40s, and perhaps refers to his father, Christian Johann Jacob Stied. High artistic quality portrait depiction.
