Charles Baxter was an English portrait and subject painter, known especially for his portraits of pretty young women. This painting is a magnificent example of nineteenth-century classical grace. It represents a portrait of a lady in the guise of Flora, with her head bent and decorated with flowers and a waving transparent white veil. Sprinkled with white and pink flowers, it is the ideal of beauty and grace.
