A representative of Young Poland, one of the most talented disciples of Jan Stanislawski, he is known primarily as the author of decorative still lifes imbued with melancholy. Definitely less common are works from his early period on the collector's market. Fascinated by the native folklore, the artist painted genre scenes and landscapes from Bronowice, near Krakow, at that time, as Stefania Krzysztofowicz-Kozakowska writes: In the early period of his work, he painted genre scenes, and then concentrated on landscape, on nocturnes close to Stanislawski's painting [S. Krzysztofowicz-Kozakowska, Jan Stanislawski and his students, Ozarow Mazowiecki 2015, p. 36].

Alfons Karpinski (Rozwadów, now a district of Stalowa Wola 1875 - Kraków 1961) studied at the School of Fine Arts in Kraków from 1891 to 1899 under Florian Cynk, Izydor Jablonski, Wladyslaw Luszczkiewicz and Leon Wyczolkowski, and then further studied under Anton Ažbé in Munich (1903), under Kazimierz Pochwalski in Vienna, and from 1907 also in Paris. He traveled to Italy and London. He lived permanently in Cracow; associated with the local community centered around the "Green Balloon," he designed decorations for the cabaret's performances. He belonged to the Tow. of Polish Artists "Sztuka", the group "Zero", was a member of the Vienna association "Secesja" and the Cracow TPSP. He participated in many exhibitions at home and abroad. During World War I he served in the Austrian army. The artist's rich oeuvre includes early genre scenes from the countryside near Krakow, landscapes and portraits, among them especially female portraits, which brought him particular popularity. In time, the main - besides portraiture - subject of his paintings became still lifes with flowers, decorative compositions with a subdued range of colors. The artist was also involved in printmaking and illustration.
