watercolor, paper, size 16 x 31 cm, signed l. d. "A.Setkowicz", framed
Adam Setkowicz (1875 - 1945) was an artist educated under Teodor Axentowicz at the Cracow Academy of Fine Arts. Throughout his artistic life, he remained faithful to one main theme, depicting in numerous watercolors scenes from Polish countryside life, hunting scenes, forest landscapes, rarely rendering views of Krakow or other subjects. The realistic genre scenes, recognizable at first glance, show the artist's dexterity in handling watercolor, and are painted lightly, impressionistically often using the color of the paper as a local color. In the work on display - two horsemen standing with a large bulb against a background of thatched cottages are probably preparing to water their saddled horses, shown from behind in a 3/4 shot, characteristic of Setkowicz's works. The watercolor in the format often used by the artist is given in a striking period frame.
