This statere comes from an old Armorican collection dispersed at auction in Rennes, France, on March 24, 2013. An earlier copper galvano of our example, preserved in the British Museum, was dated 1901, so our rare statere was known as early as the end of the 19th century! The only other comparable example is no. 1346 in the T. Voltz collection. Voltz (Monnaies & Médailles Auctions Bâle no. 25, June 19, 1995), struck with the same right and reverse corners but on a short flan with incomplete right and reverse types (with the winged figure under the horse summarized on the top wing, the rest of the body being outside the flan).
Statere on a wide, regular flan with ideally centered and complete types, in beautiful style. The reverse is a real beauty, although it has probably been rubbed in the past. The obverse is from a worn corner or soft strike. TTB to Superb.
