Silver, 3.44 g, 20.4 mm. Sabatier p. 296, no. 7, plate XXXII:10. (price: 20 francs gold)

Grade VF

In order to repel the Persian invasion, even the Church of Constantinople, reluctant to Emperor Heraclius I, emptied its treasuries and melted down valuables to support the army. Thanks to the significant amount of silver obtained, after a long period of practical lack of silver coinage, a new silver coin was introduced in 615, called the hexagram (probably from the weight of 6 grammat). The issue, particularly abundant under Constance II, survived until the beginning of the 8th century.
