Lot description
Grade: VF+/XF- help
Reference: RIC 306
Collection: Kolekcja Lecha Kokocińskiego

Silver denarius of Marcus Aurelius (AD 161–180), struck at the Rome mint in AD 174, belongs to a series issued during the peak of the Marcomannic Wars, fought along the northern frontiers of the empire against Germanic tribes. These campaigns are well documented in ancient sources, notably by Cassius Dio, and represent one of the most significant military phases of the emperor’s later reign.

The obverse presents a laureate head of the emperor facing right with the legend M ANTONINVS AVG TR P XXVIII, reflecting elements of his official titulature. The designation TR P XXVIII refers to the twenty-eighth tribunician power and provides a precise date of AD 174, corresponding to the period of sustained military operations along the Danube.

The reverse depicts a bound female figure, personifying Germania, seated left beneath a military trophy, with the legend IMP VII COS III. This imagery belongs to a well-established iconographic tradition in Roman coinage, in which defeated peoples are shown seated or subdued beneath captured arms, symbolizing Roman victory. The inscription IMP VII denotes the seventh imperial acclamation of Marcus Aurelius, formally recognizing military success, while COS III refers to his third consulship.

Such types form part of a broader group of propagandistic issues directly connected with the Danubian campaigns, providing clear numismatic evidence of how imperial victories were communicated through coinage during the later Antonine period.
