oil, canvas, 73 x 54 cm, signed and described on the back: 'WLODZIMIERZ PAWLAK | JOURNAL 03XI - 13XII AUTUMN-WINTER | 73 X 54 2012'.
The paintings from the Diaries series are formally homogeneous, in a thick layer of fresh, bright paint the artist "riffled" short lines that fill the entire painting in uniform rows. Pawlak was looking for a way to document the passage of time, this way of painting evokes a simple association with a wall in a cell and a convict marking with lines in the layers of plaster the successive weeks that are ending.
Agnieszka Szewczyk in the catalog of the artist's exhibition at Zachęta recalls his statement: "I needed a diary in general, I needed some system, I wanted to find a method for the day."
In 1980-1985, the artist studied at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts, including in the studios of R. Winiarski and R. Ziemski. Together with artists P. Kowalewski, R. Grzyb and J. Modzelewski, he founded "Gruppa." These independent artists, active at the turn of the l. 80s and 90s, organized actions of collective painting, manifesting their dissatisfaction with reality. Pawlak edited the magazine "Oj dobrze już." In 1983, he creates two series: "Pigs" and "Flies." In Pawlak's work, the inspirations of K. Malevich and W. Strzeminski are significant. For a long time, he has been creating the series "Diaries", in which the essence is the passing of time and the reflection that accompanies man on art and life.
