Tymon Niesiołowski (Lvov 1882 - Torun 1965) - painter, graphic artist, educator; from 1900 to 1905 studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow under Stanisław Wyspiański and Józef Mehoffer. From 1906 to 1926 he lived in Zakopane, from where he traveled to Italy, Paris and Munich. In 1908 he was a co-founder of the "Group of Five," from 1917 he was associated with the "Formists" grouping, and from 1922 with the "Rhythm" Association. In 1926 he moved to Vilnius, where he became director of the School of Arts and Crafts, and from 1928 taught at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Stefan Batory University. After the war he took over the chair of the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun; from 1958 he was a member of the "Torun Group." He painted - distinguished by decorativeness of form and color - still lifes, nudes, portraits, less often landscapes. His style evolved over the years; his early works reveal clear influences from Wyspianski, his later works reveal clear inspirations from French painting, including the work of Gaugin, Picasso and Matisse. In the paintings of his mature period, he often used flat patches of color, edged with strongly outlined contours. The artist was also involved in printmaking.
