Biography
He divided his life between Warsaw and his home near Kazimierz. Nature and landscape were his natural habitat and inspiration. He studied at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts, having previously graduated from the Technical University. His work is the result of careful observation of motifs selected from his surroundings and repeatedly repeated: closed gates, roads, hills, ravines, water and boats floating on its surface or dogs wading in it. He has worked with the Foksal Gallery in Warsaw since 1984. His works have been shown in many solo exhibitions, including at : Foksal Gallery, BWA Gallery in Lublin, Awangarda Gallery in Wroclaw, State Art Gallery in Sopot, Gallery 86 in Lodz, Zachęta Gallery in Warsaw, Soho Center for Visual Arts in New York, Galerie Ucher, Cologne. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions. In 1999 he was awarded the Grand Prix of the International Drawing Competition in Wroclaw. He was a recipient of scholarships from the Kosciuszko Foundation in N ew York; the Soros Foundation in the US and the Rockefeller Foundation in Italy. In recent times, he has been battling illness and painting less. In 2009, he was honored for 2008 with the Jan Cybis Prize, awarded to outstanding painters by the Association of Polish Artists for lifetime achievement.
