Marian MOKWA
1889 Malary - 1987 Sopot
He began his studies in 1905 at the College of Arts in Munich under Stuck and Ritter. He later continued his studies with M. Libermann in Berlin. He traveled extensively throughout Europe. In 1911-15 he stayed in Istanbul - from there he traveled to Jerusalem, Persia, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Mongolia, was in the Caucasus and Tibet. The fruits of these trips were dozens of canvases, hundreds of watercolors and sketches. In 1918 he settled permanently in Sopot. In 1920 he took part in four major marine exhibitions (Königsberg, Berlin, Munich, Stockholm). After the opening of the first Pomeranian exhibition at the Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts in Warsaw in 1921, a reviewer of the central press reported: Ability in a few of them can be seen. Perhaps the most outstanding talent is Mokwa. (W. Wankie, From the Warsaw Zachęta, "Świat" 1921, no. 46). He painted watercolors and oil paintings. Their content was his native Kashubia, Pomerania and the sea shores. Mokwa's talent supported by diligent work and thorough professional knowledge made his name famous abroad: in England, Sweden, Germany. In 1959 u was the only Pole to participate in the exhibition of marine painting at the Royal Society and the Society of British Marina Painters.
