Biography
Graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw under Stefan Płużanski and Michal Bylina in 1962. She had more than 60 solo exhibitions in Poland and abroad and participated in more than 250 group exhibitions. During the years of martial law, she participated in the independent culture movement by showing paintings, among others, at cyclical meetings with art at the Divine Mercy parish on Żytnia Street in Warsaw. One of her last major exhibitions was held at Warsaw's Kordegarda Gallery (1991-92). Maria Anto quickly developed her own recognizable style. She created a fantasy world, with rich colors, mood and composition. Her paintings are distinguished by a mysterious atmosphere. The artist builds a peculiar poetics. The works are dominated by dark colors illuminated by single bright spots. Ordinary objects acquire an unusual meaning. Surrounded by an aura of mystery, they cease to be ordinary - they become beautiful.
