Marek Chlanda studied at the Faculty of Graphic Arts of the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow, he received his diploma under Prof. Mieczyslaw Wejman in 1978. In 1980-1982 he taught at his alma mater. Then in 1983-1984, together with students of the university in Bergen (Norway), he carried out the experiment of the so-called traveling academy. He also taught at a branch of the Silesian University in Cieszyn in 1986-1988. Since the mid-1970s, exploring the problem of process, he combined drawing with forms such as performance, concert and documentation. He often incorporated various objects, such as pieces of fur, wooden blocks and slats, ropes, etc., within his works on paper. Through this path he came to installations. In the 1980s, the artist focused on sculpture and organizing space. He used natural raw materials, such as wood with untreated surfaces, wax, tar, iron, etc. He created multi-piece sets, usually laid out low on the ground or leaning against a wall. He did not shy away from references to literary tradition, history and mythology, but never crossed the line of literalism. In a series of "analog compositions" from the 1990s, he focused on human relationships. The artist has had dozens of individual presentations, among them an exhibition at the Museum of Art in Lodz in 1985. He has participated in important group exhibitions, including: "New Art from Poland", Stuttgart 1981, 12 Biennale of Sydney 1982, "Polish Realities", Glasgow 1988, "Positionen Polen", Berlin 1991, "Rysa w przestrzeni", Berlin-Warsaw 1994-1995, XXII Art Biennale, Sao Paulo 1994, "Art from Poland 1945-1996", Budapest 1997 and others. He is a recipient of the prestigious Nowosielski Foundation Award.
