"Pink" is a painting from the solo exhibition "Cuentacuentos" held under the banner of Art.pl Gallery in March 2024 in Warsaw. The work is signed in the upper left corner and in the lower right corner. The painting is "rotating," it can be displayed in two ways (correctly, and "upside down"), each of these options introduces different tensions and reception. Such an idea may bring to mind playing cards. However, the composition on the surface seems harmonious, its weight is balanced, but the stories are different. The motif of the mask and the intense color-strongly saturated pink-are two ingredients that unite the painting into one.
Each painting in the series "Cuentacuentos" (a Spanish word that can be translated as English "storyteller," and in Polish - storyteller) was created under the influence of fascination with the social culture of Spain. It was there that Katherine Karpowicz observed the relationship between close and strangers, their gestures and exchange of ritual compliments, touch, kisses, hugs and affection.
"Pink" is a story that the viewer can interpret for himself at will, depending on his experiences and needs. The characters are fictionalized, painted from imagination fueled by memory, the author's dreams, and favorite movies and music.
It can be a love story, friendship, sisterhood and brotherhood. A veritable celebration of a meeting, a fiesta, an exchange of glances and a theater of gestures. A painterly vivisection of human relationships. The multiplied motif of the mask allows one to go even deeper and search for symbolism - for each culture different and for each person different. There is also the motif of the mirror, which can symbolize purity of mind and the ability to see things as they are. "Pink" is a story about the complexity of relationships, which consist of many, sometimes mutually exclusive feelings that coexist simultaneously and are very human, but difficult to understand, define and reconcile. "Pink" is the essence of life with its bright and darker sides, it is an appetite for, life to continue in a strong and vibrant color.
When painting this picture, Katarzyna Karpowicz had in mind the films of Pedro Almodovar, and a song from the film "The Pink Years" directed by Alain Berliner (1997)-with the title "Rose" by Zazie.
Katarzyna Karpowicz (born 04.11.1985 in Cracow) graduated with honors from the local State High School of Fine Arts in 2005.
