Karol GAJEWSKI

1896 Warsaw - 1969 Bydgoszcz

Painter and stage designer. He was educated at the Warsaw Drawing School (from 1913). In the interwar period he worked in Warsaw theaters (National, Polish, New, Summer). He was also involved in easel painting, stained glass, polychrome and applied arts. Since 1937 he worked at the J. Slowacki Theater in Cracow, where he made designs and productions of many plays, as well as reconstructed mock-ups of old designs (including those of S. Wyspianski). He returned to this position after 1945, and also worked at other theaters. He cooperated in the organization of the Baltic Opera. His scenographic works, maintained in the traditional realist convention, were characterized by a careful recreation of the realities of the era.
