Jerzy SEWINA (1932-2001)
He was a miner and artist whose life changed dramatically after a tragic accident in a mine. After graduating from mining school, he worked in the "Halemba" mine. At the age of 39, during a heart attack in the mine, he suffered serious damage to his spine, which led to the loss of power in his legs. In the hospital he met Wladyslaw Lucinski, a teacher and art instructor, who inspired him to pursue art.
After Sevin's accident, he discovered a new passion - painting and sculpture. His work began as a form of therapy, but over time gained recognition both in Poland and abroad. He was a member of the Team of Artists at the ZDK of the "Bielszowice" mine. Sewina produced his works in a variety of techniques - from oil painting to linocuts and wood carvings. His work was distinguished by its simplicity, sincerity and emotional approach to topics related to everyday life and mining. His paintings often depicted Silesian landscapes, motifs related to the folklore and culture of the region, as well as scenes from the mines.
He was the winner of many art competitions, and his works have been exhibited in numerous galleries, including the "Colors of Silesia" exhibition organized in 2000 in Warsaw by the University of Warsaw. His works are in private collections, as well as in museum collections, including those of the Silesian Museum.
Jerzy Sewina has become a symbol of the strength of the human spirit, who was able to overcome tragedy and find a new path in art. His life and work are an inspiration for many people who face difficulties in life.
