Biography
Studied at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts under A. Nacht-Samborski; for many years was his assistant and then professor at his alma mater. He made his debut at the exhibition "Against War, Against Fascism" at the Warsaw Arsenal in 1955. He practiced painting in a limited, dim color palette. He strived for maximum synthesis of message. He drew his subjects from nature - single plants, landscapes or from his immediate surroundings - such as the interior of his studio or apartment. Using painterly means sparingly, he created paintings of great richness of matter. Winner of the C. K. Norwid Art Criticism Award in 1975, the independent J. Cybis Award in 1983 and the New York Prize of the A. Jurzykowski Foundation in 1993.
