described on the reverse: FROM THE SERIES - " PORTRAIT FROM IMAGINATION " | 1961 | MUSIAŁOWICZ
"The expressive subtleties of these heads and the richness of the differences between them are brought out by the artist by means of an ever different playing out of the ranges of gray with black and white, through an astonishing variety of their elaboration. In addition to the various types of hatching and grids, commas, dots and wet inked planes used in the past, the artist begins to use more and more often the method of collages and textural creasing of thin paper pasted on the surface of a rigid sheet. The more Musialowicz delves into the problems of Imaginary Portraits, the more effort and precision there is in his work, the more time he devotes to each centimeter of the vast plane of paper, the longer he wrestles with it - he chalks, rips it off, glues it on, pushes it away and returns anew in search of that final shape and ultimate expression of the surface, the finding of which will never be absolute." Henryk Musiałowicz, from the series Contemporary Polish Graphics, ed. Bożena Kowalska, Warsaw 1966, p.nlb.
