Henryk Cześnik studied at the State Higher School of Fine Arts (now the Academy of Fine Arts) in Gdansk. He received his diploma in the painting studio of Prof. Kazimierz Ostrowski in 1977. He works as a teacher at his alma mater and received the title of professor in 1994. His work was initially dominated by sacred themes, especially passion scenes. In the early 1980s, he created a series of paintings painted on loose, corrugated, partially unprimed canvases. From the beginning, the artist was interested in themes and existential problems, with which the form of his works resonated - sketchy shots, as if unfinished, allusive, yet dramatic and expressive. The characters in his paintings and drawings are entangled in mysterious, understated relationships with their surroundings, the situations outlined often bordering on a nightmare. Cześnik is the recipient of many awards, including winning the 1st prize of the Gdansk Art Biennale twice (1983, 1987), 1st prize in a painting competition in Frankenthal, Germany (1983), the Art Prize of the Gdansk Society of Friends of Art (1987), the Cyprian Kamil Norwid Award (1988), and the award of the Gdansk governor in the field of fine arts for 1989. He was also a resident scholarship holder at Atelierhaus in Worpswede, Germany.
