Hanna Bakuła

The well-known painter, writer and publicist is a graduate of the painting department of the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts. Her business card says "controversial person" and she is regarded as such. In 1981 she settled in Manhattan and remained in the States until 1989. She won many prestigious awards there, designed costumes and set designs for off-Broadway plays honored by the New York Times, and is also a winner of the Festival of Slavic Painters in New York. She painted pastel portraits and there she was called by critics" Witkacy in a skirt."

In 1990 she returned to Warsaw where she began a permanent collaboration with the monthly Playboy, for which she wrote columns for 17 years, and Uroda, for which she wrote for 12 years. For 5 years she was a contributor to Dziennik Łódzki. Currently she cooperates with Wirtualna Polska and has a regular column, similar in style to the columns in Playboy in the portal- www.kobieta.wp.pl. In 1986 she designed the costumes for Carmen at the Warsaw National Opera. The performance is still extremely popular today.

She has published 15 books, two of which are bestselling novels: "How to Lose Friends" and "How to Gain Friends"- astrological guides, "Operating Instructions"- a collection of personal surveys of a hundred famous people, "Bandana"- a guide for young people. "Sex on Credit"- columns from Playboy, "The Last Ball- Letters to Agnieszka Osiecka"- memoirs of their extraordinary friendship, a novel- "Idiot", "Thai Massage"- a collection of New Yorker short stories, "New York Swirl"- a scrapbook about punks of the 1980s and "The Gambler"- a cult novel about artists of the Gierek era, and "Secrets," a collection of essays published jointly with Anna Majewska and Anna Ibisz, " Hania Bania"-an autobiographical novel about childhood, "Hania Bania-the Queen of Samba," about elementary school days, " Hania Bania-the Sexual Tornado"-about high school. At the beginning of the year, a novel about New York and Warsaw, " Idiotka returns," was published.

The company, Portretowa works by portraying famous and unknown, but beautiful people. Recently, the artist has been drawing pastel landscapes and painting oil paintings related to Tarot cards, pastel portraits and situational drawings in mixed technique.

In 1997 she founded the eponymous Hanna Bakuła Foundation, and in 1999 the famous Women's Club was established at the foundation. The Foundation is dedicated to helping children from orphanages in Kielce and Golotczyzna. Since the beginning, every year the Foundation organizes the Franz Schubert Music Festival in Warsaw with the participation of the most outstanding European artists.

Hanna Bakuła is a soft feminist who supports women and their activities. She lives in Wilanow and travels a lot. Mainly to New York, to which she is still very much connected with reciprocity. Her hobby is cycling.
