Artwork description:
Edward Dwurnik's paintings in the 1980s were characterized by expression and drama of expression. At that time the artist began to create works painted with energetic brushstrokes and maintained in dark color tones.
Such works include the painting "Christ with Children," which in its brown-gray, subdued colors captures the mood of the reality in Poland at that time. The crowd of figures depicted has been simplified by the artist, becoming almost a collection of free lines filled in with a spot of color.
In the center of the composition is a slightly bent monumental crucifix, held by a man standing on a podium with a child carried "on the shoulder". A large group of people has gathered around it, some of whom are lifting up, as if in an exorcist gesture, prayer crosses. In the lower left corner, the artist has depicted a red head wearing an earpiece, which stands out from the other figures and may refer to the oppressive political system of the time.
The work carries a lot of content related to the difficult realities of life, the conflict in the way of relations and the interests of the people's state and the Church. At this point it is also worth mentioning that in 1979-1984 Edward Dwurnik worked on the series "Cross", whose paintings showed biblical scenes in contemporary rural and urban settings.
