Biography
I chose Maria Czaplicka because herstory moved and interested me, and also because she was an anthropologist, a science close to my heart. I was reading about her life and came across a passage about how she stayed in a sanatorium in Zakopane and befriended the artists and intelligentsia staying there. One of the painters, Jan Rembowski, immortalized her as an angel in his triptych "Angels Stand in Family Fields." I decided to depict her as an angel as well, but in such a way that the whole painting is her portrait, so that it tells the story of her and her life. She is dressed in fur, and her wings are also made of fur, as she traverses frigid Siberia on her anthropological expedition undertaken against all odds.
