The unit was headquartered in Lviv. In the early 1990s, the unit was a training center, later transformed into a brigade. In the 1990s and 2000s it took part in international exercises and peacekeeping missions.The 80th Airborne Assault Brigade took part in the defense of the Lugansk airport, in the fighting near the city of Schastye. It suffered losses in the August/Autumn 2014 fighting and in the fighting for Donetsk airport in January 2015.
