A replica of a 19th century Indian tomahawk-spontoon with pipe. Tree/rod made of wood, with metal connecting parts. The head in the form of an ornamental spontoon (a kind of double-edged spearhead). The spar forms a pipe.
The so-called Spontoon Tomahawk Pipe was used widely in the 19th century by Indian tribes of the Great Plains (e.g., Cheyenne, Lakota, Comanche). Initially used as a weapon, over time the tomahawk-weapon and pipe began to be combined in one object, with ritual use. Specialists surmise that around the mid-19th century. Spontoon Tomahawk Pipe became primarily an object with ritual and ceremonial use.
