A set of two tsubas designed for use with the "Daisho", which is a wakizashi and katana set. Daisho could only be worn by samurai, which is why it became their symbol.
The tsubas are signed "Hikone Ju Nyudo Soten Sei."
Decorated with a motif of maple trees, deer, young pines and waterfalls.
Maple trees and deer are of special significance here. In Japanese culture, both of these elements mark the arrival of autumn. Together they also allude to the tradition of Japanese aristocracy to observe the changing seasons in Nara, the former capital of Japan. In modern Japan, the saying "Clones and deer" will signify a well-matched pair.
Made during the Edo period.
