Hortus Medicus (1683-), the botanical garden of the University of Amsterdam, was established in 1682 by decree of the Amsterdam City Council. The garden was founded in 1683. It is one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world, created primarily as a herb garden for doctors and apothecaries and to treat the city after the plague. The first tokens granting access to the garden for doctors, surgeons and chemists were sold in 1684.
