Founded on 3 May 1837 the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens was originally housed in the residence of architect Stamis Kleanthes; on the north east side of the Acropolis. The medal dates from 1839; at the start of the fund-raising. In November; classes began in the new building; the 'Propylaea'; shown on the reverse and designed by the Danish architect Theophil Hansen. Copper. NGC MS 65 BN
