Greece Medal (1839) University of Athens. Otto (1815-1867 King 1832-1862); University of Athens; Contributors Medal. 1839 by Konrad Lange. Obverse: Bust left wearing embroidered uniform jacket. Reverse: Façade of the university building. 45mm (Spink 5; 376; cf Melotopoulos p 15/16). Founded on 3 May 1837 the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens was originally housed in the residence of architect Stamis Kleanthes; on the north east side of the Acropolis. The medal dates from 1839; at the start of the fund-raising. In November; classes began in the new building; the 'Propylaea'; shown on the reverse and designed by the Danish architect Theophil Hansen. Copper. NGC MS 65 BN
