Greece. Otto I (1832-1862). Medal 1839 University of Athens, by Konrad Lange. Founded on 3 May 1837, the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens was originally housed in the residence of architect Stamis Kleanthes, north east side of the Acropolis. In November 1839 lectures began in the new building, the Propylaea, shown on the reverse and designed by Danish architect Theophil Hansen. Copper 45mm. Spink 5.376; cf Melotopoulos p 15/16.
