Crimean War - an armed conflict fought between 1853 and 1856. Its cause was Russia's policy of expansion at the expense of the Ottoman Empire and the fear of the Western powers of excessive growth of the power of the Russian state. Great Britain, France and the Kingdom of Sardinia supported Turkey in this war. Russian troops were successful in the Caucasus against the Turkish army, but succumbed to the modern armed armies of the Western countries in the Crimea. Russia's defeat contributed to the growth of independence tendencies among Poles, which was one of the reasons for the outbreak of the January Uprising.
