Jedysan (Oshchakovsky Field) is a historical land on the Black Sea between the Dniester and Dnieper rivers. Since the 13th century it belonged to the Golden Horde, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (since 1397), the Crimean Tatars (since 1492), and the Ottoman Empire (since 1538). The name of the country comes from the name of the fortress "Yeni Dünya" (New World) used by the Turks. Yedisan was inhabited by Crimean Tatars and Nogais. The latter formed the Yamboluk (oczakov) orda, and after 1720 the Yedisan orda. Part of this land fell within Russia's borders since the signing of the Russian-Turkish Treaty of Küczük Kajnardji in July 1774.All of Yedisan came under the rule of Tsarina Catherine II under the Treaty of Iaşi. The Nogais were resettled beyond the Urals. The criminal practice carried out on the Nogai Tatars by the Russians was repeated in 1944 by Stalin against the Crimean Tatars. In 1794, the important port city of Odessa was founded. The Russians called the lands captured from the Tatars New Russia. Currently a Russian-Ukrainian war zone.
