One of the first maps of Galicia drawn by cartographers in Austrian service The name Galicia itself was a Latinized form of the name of the Duchy of Halych. In this sense, it alluded to the tradition of Kievan Rus little in line with the doctrine of Third Rome. Catherine II had basically reached the limes of Third Rome in the west, with the exception precisely of Galicia. This was to be realized by her successors. But a far more important task was to return to the capital of Second Rome, Constantinople. To block this thrust, Britain, France and Sardinia triggered the Crimean War.
