CIVITATES Orbis Terrarum. A two-part publication containing: a) facsimile of the monumental work Civitates orbis terrarum by Georg Braun and Frans Hogenberg originally published in Cologne in 1576 (Volume II of the series) and b) scholarly commentary by M. Scheffold (16 pp.). The facsimile contains 59 views and plans of cities, including the Polish cities of Danzig, Grodno and Zgorzelec. The publication is a masterpiece of modern graphic and printing art, faithfully reproducing both the aesthetic qualities and formal features of the original (sheet sizes, original color) - Müller und Schindler Publishers, Simbach an Inn 2016. Luxurious leather binding with rich gilding, cabinet condition. Folio (42 x 29 cm), 256 pp.

Civitates orbis terrarum is undoubtedly one of the most important works in the history of European culture. Published in six volumes between 1572 and 1618, it represented the sum total of the educated man's ideas of the world at that time, no longer limited to his native Europe, but also taking into account the newly discovered corners of the globe - from Asia and Africa to the Americas. Thus, for example, the ancient Inca capital of Cuzco appeared to Europeans for the first time. The series also includes views of Polish cities - Gdansk, Szczecin, Swiebodzin, Biecz, and Krakow, Lublin, Lowicz, Poznan, Warsaw, Zamosc, Grodno, Vilnius and Lvov, most of them making their debut in the history of European iconography. Browsing Civitates today is a real opportunity to travel back in time. This opportunity is afforded to us both by the extremely anecdotal descriptions accompanying the individual views, which were drawn up by the work's co-author, Kolonian Georg Braun, and by the figural relays and genre scenes incorporated into the works, showing the daily life of the inhabitants of European (and other) cities. The latter were reportedly included in the work also so that it could not be used for military purposes by the Turks, whose religion forbade them to look at depictions of human figures.
