In the early 1980s Wojciech Sadley made a series of collages, among which were compositions entitled "Portrait." He exhibited them together with fabrics and felts at an exhibition in Switzerland in 1984 (Sadley. Tapisseries et collages, Ferme de la Chapelle, Lancy). A surviving author's sketch from the 1980s presents a design for an exhibition composed of similar works (reproduced drawing in: J. Barszcz, J. Zawadzki, B. Righesso, Wojciech Sadley - the fabric of life, Warsaw 2019, p. 237).
The presented "Portraits" were made in South Africa in 1981 and so far belonged to the private collection of the recipients, to whom the artist also dedicated them.
