Artwork description:
Tadeusz Kantor is considered one of the most prominent representatives of the Polish artistic avant-garde of the post-war period. He was involved in various disciplines of art including theater, happening and fine arts.
In the work on display, the artist showed a portrait of a mature "serious" man, who is depicted in an inelegant gesture - with a finger in his nose. This way of portraying the figure recurred in the images from the series "These Serious Gentlemen", in which Tadeusz Kantor, with his inherent humor, exposed the "other self" of figures who created themselves as respectable, distinguished people.
The portrait was executed with vigorous, confident strokes of the marker, which were complemented by pastel patches of white, black and brown, giving depth to the composition and enriching the texture of the whole. In the work one can sense the spontaneity in the shaping of the figure, which fuels the impression of the authenticity of the image and completes the satirical meaning.
