Stefan Gierowski - painter and illustrator, prominent representative of the Polish geometric abstraction trend. Graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow (studies in the atelier of Zbigniew Pronaszko) and history of art at the Jagiellonian University, but since the early postwar years associated with the Warsaw milieu. There, among other things, he co-founded the famous Krzywe Koło Gallery, taught at the Academy of Fine Arts, or engaged in the activities of the opposition "independent culture" of the 1980s.
During the political thaw of the 1950s, Gierowski abandoned the previously practiced figuration in favor of purely abstract painting . The essence of his work became the search for new possibilities for the impact on the viewer of particular color combinations - usually saturated, bright, vibrant. Characteristic of Gierowski, both painting on canvas and on paper, is subtle gradient shading within a single color used.
