Marek Żuławski (1908 Rome - 1985 London)
In 1926 he began his studies at the Warsaw School of Fine Arts under Karol Tiche, Felicjan Szczęsny Kowarski and Leonard Pękalski. In 1935 he received a ministerial scholarship and left for further studies in Paris. Since 1937 he settled permanently in London, where he became one of the most interesting figures and artistic personalities of the Polish émigré community. He is the author of a collection of sketches on English painters "From Hogarth to Bacon", Warsaw 1973.
At the beginning of his career, he painted in the convention of post-impressionist colorism, with time he increasingly simplified and synthesized the form.
He belonged to the famous Zulawski family. He was the son of Jerzy, a playwright, translator and writer. He had two brothers, Juliusz, a poet, novelist and translator of English poetry, and Lawrence, a musicologist and composer. Other family members include the well-known director and screenwriter Andrzej Zulawski and his son Xawery, also a director, creator, among others, of the film "Polish Russian War" based on Dorota Maslowska's novel of the same title.
