Jerzy POTRZEBOWSKI
1921 Sandomierz - 1974 Cracow
During the war, underground activist and concentration camp prisoner. He studied painting from 1945 to 1950 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow under the direction of Fryderyk Pautsch, Ignacy Pieńkowski, Zygmunt Radnicki and Czesław Rzepiński. He permanently lived and worked in Cracow. In his work, he formally and thematically referred to realistic painting of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, painting atmospheric landscapes, portraits, flowers, genre and battle scenes. He is known for his paintings depicting trips and returns from hunting, sledding, harnessing or fighting roosters. He found inspiration in literature, painting scenes from Sienkiewicz's Trilogy and in poetry (the series Enchanted Carriage). He participated in numerous exhibitions, including those of the All-Poland Zachęta Group, and had many solo shows. In 1965 he established contact with Bohmans Art Gallery in Stockholm, and his works also began to appear in exhibitions abroad - in Vienna, Stockholm, London, New York.
