Janusz LEWANDOWSKI
1937 Rokicie - 2022 Warsaw
Studied at the Faculty of Painting of the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw in the studio of Prof. Artur Nacht-Samborski. He received his diploma in 1964. After graduation, he took an active part in artistic life. He was honored with numerous awards and distinctions, including at the XXIV All-Polish Winter Salon of Fine Arts "Metaphor in Contemporary Painting and Drawing" in Radom (1980), the Warsaw Mayor's Award at the Exhibition of Painting and Graphics of Artists of the Warsaw Environment at Zachęta (1985.), the "Artists in the International Year of the Child" Award at Zachęta (1979), the Miyauchi Polish-Japanese Award (1995), the Wladyslaw Hasior Award (2011), a nomination for the Norwid Award (2012), and the Kazimierz Ostrowski Award (2017). In 2018, he received the order "Meritorious for the Polish state and Polish culture."
The point of reference for his work is Polish art of the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. However, the paintings created in the convention of realism are very difficult to define, specify or describe. The mastery of the workshop, the constant, delicate color palette, the symbolic representation of content, while keeping compositional elements to a minimum, and the painterly mysteriousness are the features that make no one pass indifferently by Janusz Lewandowski's paintings. Symbolism is by its very nature romantic and so are Janusz Lewandowski's paintings.
