"We are dealing with the Popish juiciness of color, whose patches have been arranged in ordered or rhythmic systems of abstract signs. At the base of these signs, after all, there is an object, an object or a landscape, already absent, but characterized by the memory of its existence, the existence of the "true appearance of things." An image built of spots - signs, becomes an afterimage of reality, if I may use the term of Władysław Strzemiński. An afterimage that is ordered, arranged in sequences that make us think of narrative threads, a story without words, and therefore one that is experienced through the senses rather than available to an intellect attuned to the calculus of sentences and semantic notions."
Anda Rottenberg on the work of Jan Tarasin. Quoted in catalog of the exhibition Jan Tarasin, Zachęta - National Gallery of Art, Warsaw 1995, p. 5.
