Biography
Studied at the Warsaw Drawing Class (1883-85) and then at the Academy of Fine Arts in St. Petersburg, including in the studio of the battle painter B. P. Willewalde (in 1885-86). In 1889 he traveled with Jozef Pankiewicz to Paris, where his painting was greatly influenced by the experience of Impressionism. Later he also created symbolic compositions. Upon his return, he lived permanently in Warsaw. He painted portraits, landscapes and genre scenes. He also made illustrations for novels and magazines, including "Tygodnik Ilustrowany". He is the most important Polish impressionist next to Jozef Pankiewicz, and his work had a huge influence on Polish landscape painting, especially the compositions and colors of his paintings.
