Willem de KLERK [1800 Dordrecht - 1876 Dordrecht] Studied painting in the studios of Pieter Hofman (1755-1837) and Adrianus van der Koogh (1796-1831). He was a member of the "Pictura" Art Society in Dordrecht. In 1827- 1828 he lived in the Ardennes. In 1835 he traveled along the Rhine valley, painting river landscapes. In 1838, he traveled to Bohemia and Saxony. Two years later, after returning to the Netherlands, he married Ida von Bezsekoom. Willem de Klerk is known primarily as a landscape painter. His later works show the influence of Barend Cornelis Koekkoek (1803-1862), thanks to whom Klerk came to be known as the "Koekkoek of Dordrecht." The artist's works are in the collections of the Rouen and Nimegue museums.
