A significant place in the oeuvre of Seweryn Bieszczad is occupied by works based on literary anecdote, especially the works of Adam Mickiewicz. A series of paintings constituting illustrations to Pan Tadeusz was created around 1880, during the artist's stay at General Kowalski's estate in Bircza near Przemyśl. The collection of the Regional Museum in Jaslo, however, includes earlier watercolors depicting scenes from the work.
Seweryn Bieszczad, a student at the Cracow School of Fine Arts from 1868-1876, also studied in Vienna and at the Munich Academy under A.Wagner. He was primarily a genre painter, author of paintings of village life and small towns. Many of his works are based on literary motifs (such as scenes from the works of A.Mickiewicz). He also painted city views and landscapes, including those of the Krosno area, where he settled permanently in 1890. He exhibited a lot - in the Society of Friends of Fine Arts in Cracow, in the Krywult Salon and the Society for the Encouragement of Fine Arts in Warsaw, in Lviv, in Munich and in Vienna.
